The way this weekend turned out was not at all how I had planned, and I say that in the best way.
I had planned on taking this past Friday off to spend the day at the Minnesota State Fair with my sisters, nephews and mom. I decided to wear the trusty garmin to track how far we walked through out the day. It turns out in about 8 or so hours we walked about 8 miles. However my garmin died about an hour or so before we left so I rounded up a mile as that was our average pace for the day. I was surprised that my nephews made it the whole day as one has pneumonia and the other had a fever the last three days. Medicine is great!
Here are a few shots from the day. First I met Jason and Alexis who are local radio hosts here and some really funny people! They told me about Gizmo’s pizza sandwich which I promptly stolled over and got for lunch. YUM! It is sausage, pizza sauce and cheese wrapped up an toasted on hoagie roll. Holy yum was that good!
E didn’t want to keep his tongue in his mouth, so I joined in on the fun!
We all went on the giant slide! B was a little scared so we wanted me to sit next to him on the way down. He even wanted me to hold his hand. Then at the bottom he jumped up and said “I want to do that again!” and so did E! Next year boys! I also found my sugar daddy….or not… 🙂
by about 6 the boys were still going strong but I was fading, and getting a little worried about the 18 miler that was on tap for the next morning so mom and I dipped out and left the boys with my sisters.
I finally got home at 8 (my mom picked me up at 8am, hello long day!). I changed my clothes and headed over to my softball team’s bbq to make a appearance then home and to bed!
Then Saturday was the day! The 18 miler! This was the longest run that I have ran since 2009 marathon training. It was my longest training run that cycle and it was terrible. This time I made it better. The first 3.5 were with a fellow marathoner Laurie. We met up back at the gym with our run club and did another 8.5. My friends Jeff and Stacey stayed with me and Stacey was even my fuel-mule! (I need a fuel belt stat!!) We looped back to the gym and I got a bottle of water and some chomps, and headed out for the last solo 6. That was the worst. It was close to noon, humid and hot and sunny! It sort of reminded me of the 2009 Grandma’s marathon, but I pushed through and made it back to the gym! I had a frosty smoothie, foam rolled and headed home to sit in the AC. Oh! I also bought new shoes! Thanks Brooks!
Once the running portion of the day was over it was time to drive down to Mankato for a house warming party! I didn’t even have time for a nap, but I felt surprisingly well! I think I am finally starting to understand this whole proper fueling and hydration thing! WIN!
Sunday morning I has all of my alarms turned off and I still woke up before 9 am! I guess I wasn’t as tired as I thought! I had 60 mins of cross-training on tap for Sunday and it was HOT! But since I was biking I wasn’t as worried about it. I explored my running trails, and then some. I was on my way back to my house, when I met an un-friend on the trial! A snake! YIKES! I didn’t see it until I was riding over it! EEK! It was black and white and definitely NOT a gartersnake! Sorry little guy or girl, but I ran over your tail! Alll in all I put 12 miles on my new to me bike, which I just named today Mr. Melvin Yellowstone, or Melo yello for short.
So that was my weekend. Lots of miles on me. Did you count up all of those miles!? I did…8 walking, 18 running, and 12 biking! That’s 38 miles!!! In three days! That’s lot of miles! Yay Me!
I’ve been quiet lately because I haven’t quite been living up to my training, and a little down about things, but this weekend, I have started to get my mojo back. I’m getting back to my rhythm. Here’s hoping the streak continues!
I’m coming for you Chicago!
I’m crazy. I’m impulsive. I’m easily persuaded. I’m surrounded by runner friends. I’m a runner. I’m registered for the CHICAGO freaking MARATHON!!
Back in October when my friend Linda told me she was going to run the Chicago marathon with her friend Jamie, I thought, “well good luck to you lady, I’m out”! I did not want to go through another summer of
not really training to have my inaugural marathon experience almost be cancelled due to heat!
(Let’s take you back to my first marathon – Grandma’s Marathon 2009: 90 degrees, 70% humidity and not a cloud in the sky for all of my 26.2 miles! I barely made it the first 5 miles with out walking. It was disappointing to say the least, but in the end I got what I paid for, and what I got was a finishing time of 6:15 and a sweet tan line!. 2013 Goal: 5:45. The key for me is getting out there any doing the training, I know this now, but I have to make it happen for myself!)
Check out this sweet sweet tan line! The pic below is about 15 minutes later…Stick a fork in me I am D-U-N! I
couldn’t didn’t want to walk the mile back to Heidi’s car, so I laid down behind bar…perfectly normal… The BF at the time decided this is when I was most photogenic, I disagree.I did it! Woo Hedi and her bestest sign ever!
But back to now…I kept thinking about it and kept hearing that some other blogger ladies that ran the TC Marathon last fall were all going to run Chicago too! It all convinced me. I should do it. Heidi did amaze-balls at her redemption marathon last year in Fargo! I could do just as good for myself! I would have people to hang out with.
Peer pressure (in the best way) got to me and I figured that I should. I wanted to. So today at noon I tried to register…try being the key word. I tried every little while for about 3 hours (which is not good for productivity during my 2 day work week this week…) Finally at about 3pm I got registered! Lucky me, lots of other people were not so lucky including my friend Linda and Julia! 😦 The website now says that there are 15,000 spots left (out of 45,000!) and they will re-open registration on Thursday night. YIKES! How nerve racking!!
I am glad that I got in, I am hopefully that all of my friends who want to get in will! Come Thursday at 5 there will be LOTS of traffic on the Chicago Marathon website!
I had been looking forward to spectating the Twin Citites Marathon for a long time once my friend Linda said that she would come out and sit on the side of the road with me for a few hours!
For as many races as I have run I have not ever just gone to a race just to spectate. Sure I’ve gone to run my race and hung out afterwards to watch some people coming in. Or at the Get in Gear I hung out with Annie and Maria in my car after we finished the 10k and waiting for Ann and Hannah come in from the half marathon! I think that was the only time I’ve spectated.
So the planning started about the week of the race and I was trying to come up with race sign ideas. Then I got invited to Ann’s mararthon meet up and suddenly I had a TON of peeps to cheer for! (See my list from my last post!) I employed Ann’s talents to make my signs while Julia and I sat around and chatted and watched, then chatted a bit with Kat via Ichat. It was only the second time I talked to Kat or Julia but Ann’s got great taste in people because these girls are all sorts of awesome and now my friends whether the like it or not!
So race morning came and silly Linda promised John from run club that we would meet him at the start line to pick up a bottle of his drink that he would later want us to have a mile 13. (He was going to try to BQ and the mystery drink must have worked because he did!) So I had to leave at 6:30 to drive through traffic up to Minneapolis and deal with all of the traffic around the dome but Linda finally found John. By the time I dropped her off to run to meet him, I found a place to park and we decided to stay to see the start. Whilst standing on the corner feeling like a loser because I wasn’t actually running I saw Hannah and her dad as well as a girl that I went to High School with that I didn’t even know was running. I wish Kristi good luck, but I don’t think she remembered/recognized me. Oh well!
We made our way to mile 14 parked and walked the mile back to 13 because that’s where John was going to look for my awesome signs, and his magic juice.
We saw Carl, John, Jonnie, Laurie, Nick, Julia, then decided to move on to meet up with Ann and Jay where every they were robot dancing. (I’ll post their video soon). But because going from 13 to 16 we would miss a lot of people we decided to hit up 23 but before that of course I get the text that Kat had just crossed 13 so we race down the road to 14 and I see her and I’m screaming her name and jumping like and idiot, and I’m pretty sure she just saw the sign waved and was gone, not sure if she even saw me, but whatevs. Hearing someone shouting your name is all that counts right? Perfect.
So we continued over to 23 and by the time we got there John had finished and Karl was JUST running by, we got to the corner and there he was! Good timing for us! We also saw him at the very start line, he just happened to be standing on the other side of the fence baracade! So we got to see Julia (or she saw us) and I jumped out and ran with her just about a block until the chaos at the water stop. She was doing awesome as expected! Then next came Jonnie and Laurie, but we only saw Jonnie and he was doing great as well! Then came Nick and Jen and Kat and Falon and Hannah and her dad! It was awesome to see so many people that I knew out there running!! I ran with the girls for a little while each just like I did with Julia. I didn’t say much or really know what to say. Heck I didn’t even really know if they wanted anyone to even talk to them, but too bad for them, because I did!
They all finished strong and safely! I’m so glad and proud to know so many amazing people that accomplished something so amazing that day!
Congratulations to all of you for and amazing marathon! I’m so glad that I got to share in a few footsteps with you! You are all amazballs!
Sidenote: I have some pictures, but I am unprepared today. I had a family emergency and had to pack up to go to Chicago so I’m typing this up on my little sister’s laptop. I think if I take up any more precious time on her computer she’ll have a heart attack! So time to go now, but I promise to post a pics only post soon!!
Today is of course Thursday, which for me also means a very long work day. My day basically consists of leaving my house at 7:30 and not getting home until about 9:30. Fuuuun….this is what having two jobs is…So right now as I type I am getting paid! (woop woop!) I’m a receptionist/glorified Wal-mart greeter part time at a country club, aka: I get paid to catch up on reading books/blogs and writing blogs, as well as catching up work from my real job, with the occasional envelope stuffing assignment.
So I am looking forward to a few things this weekend, and yes, I know this post would be more approps for a Friday evening, but hopefully tomorrow after working for 10.5 hours I will take my butt out for a 9 mile run (I’m saying this now for accountability people! It must get done!).
Friday will consist of the above mentioned run, prepping food (see pic below) for my little nephew Easton’s 2nd birthday party on Saturday, and sleeping because I’m still not 100% from the cold that took me out of work on Monday.
Saturday will be of course the par-tay with my family and the BIL’s family. After the cake and ice cream I am hoping to stop by Ann’s for her pre-marathon meet up for the Twin Cities Marathon on Sunday! I’m not running either the marathon nor the 10 mile but I am so excited to know and cheer for so many wonderful people that are running! When I did Grandma’s in 2009, it was an amazing experience despite nearly 90* temps and cloudless skies, because of Heidi, her mom Karen, the BF at the time, my mom, sister Sarah and cousin Paige as well the hundreds of spectators that cheer me on that day.
And Duh, I’d be horrible to not include my great running friends that completed the marathon with me that day: Tyler, Jay, Amber, Lisa, Megan, and Mia!
I am excited that 1) I know a dozen or so people running so I’ll have lots of familiar faces to look for, and 2) I get to be one of those spectators that cheer up a runner who feels like the finish will never come. Maybe I’ll actually make someone cry, like I cried running through downtown Duluth that hot day!
I’ve been compiling a list of run club peeps, twitter peeps, blog peeps and IRL friends that are all running this weekend and this is the list I have come up with so far. If I’ve missed you let me know! I’m making a sign with everyone’s name and I’d hate to leave you out! We’ll (running buddy Linda and I) be out there cheering our hearts out most likely with Ann and her husband Jay!
I’ll wish good luck to all of your running this weekend and I can’t wait to cheer you all on as you accomplish something AMAZING!
